One of the things that often stops us from moving forward is fear. It’s so prevalent that it’s one of our regular interview questions in our Interview Series! I swear every time I meet with my coach, fear comes up. It could be fear of what others may say, fear of failing or making a mistake, or even fear of success. For me, this means I am paralyzed. I won’t take action…even a small step!
What works to get past it for me though is to decide on what my small step is and then go do it. I likely will learn something about myself in the process which will either tell me that nope, this isn’t what I want to be doing or I may realize how silly it was to be afraid in the first place.
You may have seen my TV segment from last week. The amount of fear that came up for me was enormous. I was anxious it wouldn’t go well. I was anxious it WOULD and somehow I would have to do TV segments in the future. (I know, it’s silly.) I was anxious about the topic. Why am I sharing this? There was no real reason not to do it beyond my fear. So, little by little, I did the prep required for the segment. I had to tell myself it was something that I was trying and, if it was terrible, oh well. At least I tried it. While the actual segment certainly wasn’t perfect, it was the first time I’ve ever done anything like that. Next time, I have some things in mind that I might do differently and I’ll likely have a lot less fear.
If you suspect that fear may be holding you back right now, I want to encourage you to think about a small step you can take to make some progress. You can do it!
