We’ve made it through our first real week of the year. If you set new goals, how are you doing?? I’ve definitely set goals per my advice to you. This year, I tried to be cognizant of what I could actually accomplish without making myself crazy. I have a habit of taking on way too many things and then getting overwhelmed when I can’t do them all…even though no human person could do them all!
You may know where this post is going now. Even though I set what I thought were totally realistic action steps for what I’m working on this year, I am not even close to checking off my daily or weekly goals for this month. We’ve just completed the first week! This is when people with New Year’s resolutions actually maintain them!
But here’s the thing. I have a whole year. And if last year was any indication of what this year may bring, there are ebbs and flows. I am transitioning to a new job at work and that means that I am currently doing two jobs. How likely is it that I can also tackle all of my personal goals at the same time? Not that likely. But, as Becca kindly reminded me at the end of last week, I’ve made progress. And I’m making little steps all the time to bring my life more in line with my values and what I’d like it to look like.
If I focus on all that I cannot get done, I miss being present now. I miss enjoying what is in front of me and I miss recognizing how far I’ve already come. Starting something new, while stressful, is one of the parts I love the most. I love to learn new things and I’m smack dab in the middle of that right now. I might as well enjoy the ride.
If you’re already having trouble keeping up with your goals for the year, just remember it’s a journey. You’ll get there with little steps toward your goal.
