How do you feel about uncertainty? While this was not my chosen theme for the year, it seems that uncertainty chose me this year. The entire year has been filled with uncertainty about what the future will hold and thoughts swirling in my head over if I’m taking the right steps. In the beginning of the year, there was a lot of uncertainty at my company and I presented about how to lead through uncertainty to the leaders at my company (using some things I learned from reading Uncertainty). Even though I’ve now left the company, uncertainty has followed me.
When you keep getting presented with a theme in different situations in life, I believe that it’s the universe giving you a little tap and telling you that you need to learn this lesson. So, what is mine? I need to embrace uncertainty. The planner in me absolutely hates this, but this is the season I’m in. Life is uncertain. If I’m being honest, I don’t think this is a season. It’s just life. It isn’t predictable and that’s one of the beautiful parts about it.
Since I’ve left my 12 year corporate career, I’ve been learning a lot about how to push down the fear of uncertainty and just make the next right step. I knew with 100% certainty that it was time to leave so that is what I did. My next step was to dive into the things I had been wishing for more time on like what we’re doing here at Pop and Banter. I’m passionate about supporting working women and I have a special affinity for working moms so I’m working on some projects to help support them.
I have no idea where this will all lead and that’s hard. Wouldn’t it be great if you could look in a crystal ball to know where you’ll end up? How will this time play out? Where will it lead? What will be the result of the decisions I’m making now? I could certainly try to force an outcome, but that is not the journey I’m on. Today, I just have to make the next right step for the present moment and trust that my future self will end up right where she should be.
If you’re struggling with uncertainty, I encourage you to do the same. Just make the next right step for you at this moment and allow the rest to unfold in the future.
