We’re in month three of trying something new for fitness. This time we tried a barre class. Tiffany had never tried it before except for some short YouTube videos and Becca has tried it once or twice in a studio but mainly takes classes on YouTube. Here’s what we thought.
What is it?
Barre is a mixture of ballet, Pilates, and yoga that combines the benefits of lengthening muscles, while strengthening them, leaving you with sculpted, lean muscles. The barre is used as a prop to balance while doing isometric strength training exercises, combined with high reps of small range-of-motion movements. In addition to the barre, some studios will provide you with a ball, weights or a rope to use during the class.
What do I wear?
Tight fitting yoga pants, fitted shirt, and sticky (barre) socks.
What gear do I need?
Barre socks and a bottle of water. If you don’t have barre socks (we didn’t!), you can likely purchase them at your studio when you arrive.
Overall I thought…
B: Totally worth the early morning wake up call! The class was similar to the YouTube videos I’ve done, but much more intense, and overall a better workout.
T: Wow! It was a tough workout. It was so different than anything else I’d done before. I definitely didn’t pick up on all of the movements since they are so slight so I’d like to go again!
I was surprised by….
B: How small movements were preferred over bigger movements. Sometimes you can make a bigger circle, but bigger is not better – it is about small movements and overall control, which intensified the movements.
T: How tiny the movements required could be. I almost couldn’t see people moving sometimes with the “tucks” and “squeezes.” Even though they were little movements, they definitely had impact.
I wish I had…
B: Stretched a bit before class, as we just dove straight in and I felt slightly unprepared.
T: Similar to other things we’ve tried, I wish I would have relaxed at the beginning of class. I was nervous, guys. I’m still out of shape, but I need to just own it. I showed up which is half the battle!
Would you do it again?
B: Yes! It is a great overall body workout and I feel so strong. It also is a dynamic class – there is a lot going on and we move through exercises quickly so my mind has little time to sit and think – it is GO time!
T: Yes! It kicked my booty…and legs…and arms. I felt like jelly walking afterwards which I think means my body could use it! The “regulars” in class also told me that it takes a few classes to get the hang of it and that it is addicting. I’m intrigued!
